Heidi's Hideaway....
An Answered Prayer!
I am so excited to tell ya'll about this answered prayer! Heidi is asking to lay down to sleep at nighttime!
Some of you might know the issues we've had with Heidi and sleeping over the past 6-8 months or so. She has always slept in her own bed and started out great sleeping through the night at a few months old. Then at about 9 months she started waking up at night again and we thought it was because she was hungry. Well, that turned into play time and it would take well over an hour, sometimes 2 or 3 hours, to get her back asleep. Well, John and I are not very pleasant people with a lack of sleep and John was also transferring jobs and would have to start getting up even earlier. So, we had to work on getting Heidi to sleep all night again.
Well, knowing how strong willed and crafty Heidi was we decided to go cold turkey and let her "cry it out". That was very hard, but we knew she was physically fine and just wanted to play or cuddle, so we marched on. It took just a few nights and she caught on. But those were some hard nights. It is very difficult to hear your child cry and do nothing. Heidi was also projectile vomiter as a small baby , she never really spitup, it was much more violent, and when she got very upset there she went. But she never did thank goodness. In the end she would sleep like a rock and wake up so happy, like nothing ever happened. So that encouraged us and relieved us from thinking we were scarring her for life.We did have some setbacks here and there, with colds and such, but now she was back to sleeping all night.
The only thing was she still had to fall asleep taking a bottle and then we would ever so carefully lay her down and pray she wouldn't wake up and have to start all over. Then oneday she started to push the bottle away and chat awhile then fall asleep. But we had never got to the point where we could lay her down awake and her fall asleep on her own. Until last week...
Most of the time when I am sitting with Heidi in the quiet darkness I use that time for quiet prayers about each other and our needs. I remember asking so many times for God to just help us. Help us figure this out and guide us to do what is best for each other. WELL, I was in the middle of our usual routine, Heidi was snuggled up with me chugging some warm milk and I'm deep in my prayer thoughts and I hear her say in her tiny voice, "down?"
And I'm thinking, " oh, she wants down to play..." So, I tell her, " It's sleepytime, not playtime." And again she says, "down?"
Then I notice she is pointing to her bed and saying down. So I'm thinking to myself, " yeah, right. As soon as I lay you down, then the howling will begin!"
But again she points and say, "down?"
So, I leaned over and told her, " Ok, I'm gonna lay you down."
And that was that.
No crying. She went right to sleep.
WOW.
It shouldn't, but it always amazes me when God answers prayers that we don't even know how to put into words.
She has been doing this every night since. We even went out of town and she still did it! Now we are not without a few bumps. Like she might ask to lay down, then a minute later yell for you. But I sit with her a couple more minutes and she'll ask again to lay down and that's that.
Amazing!

The Prodigal Friend....
I was sooooooooo excited to hear from my long lost friend Heather. We were roomies at UA and I haven't seen her in FOREVER. She was up this weekend and since I was in C'ville I meet up with her lunch. I miss you Heather! It was so great to see you!
Heather also told me that she was 7-7 at birth too. So maybe Heidi has hope of being tall and beautiful too!
Heather and Heidi and being silly...
Heidi got hold of my camera while we were eating and took this picture, I though it was funny since that is her favorite cup.:)

Visiting the Fam'
Heidi and I traveled down to Centreville for a few days while John is in New Jersey. We stayed with GG and DD (Grandmomma Earle and Granddaddy Hal) and had a terrific time. Heidi really seemed to have a great time and I think GG and DD did too! We visited lots of folks while we where there and can't wait to see everyone again at Thanksgiving!
Granddaddy with his crew! That's a wiggly bunch!

Reunion Slideshow
Ok so here it is!!! The slideshow I made and kept forgetting! Ha. Since no one sent any pictures in I used ones from my own collection. They are pretty amusing if I do say so myself. Enjoy!
Just a Swingin'
We had to search all over to find a swing for Heidi. We put it in the basement so we could use it this winter. She loves it. Which is kind of surprising because she hated the baby-swing.
Anyway, this is actually supposed to go on a swingset, but it works here too! Daddy did a great job installing it!
We were grilling so we had the garage door open. That why we are so bundled up. It's usually not so chilly!
Daddy being silly with Heidi.
I love the swing!

Fall is finally here!
I am so glad the weather is FINALLY turned cooler. I love fall and so does Heidi!
It so nice to go outside before lunch and not melt. :)
Here are some pics from our house!
This is the view from our mailbox. The leaves are just starting to change. I hope we get some more rain so they don't just dry up and fall off.
I couldn't get this picture to rotate. This is our pumpkin, Jack. He's reusable!

Heidi Lou-Who
Birds the Word
So we went to the Birmingham Zoo again last weekend. It was fun as always and not nearly as hot as last time. We started at the opposite side this time and went to the birds first.
You can walk in to this area and feed the birds. John took Heidi inside the area. She was a bit scared at first, but was quickly entertained. If you have food the birds immediately swarm you and three of them landed on John.

Muscadines or Scuppernongs?
So we were out in the front yard and I kept smelling something sweet and familiar. At first I couldn't place it. Then it hit me. Muscadines!
Well I dragged John around to help me locate them and we found a huge mess of them growing in the trees at the end of our drive. So of course I had to pick some. Since I was holding Heidi, John graciously helped pick them. And them stored them in his pants pockets. We gave some to Heidi to put in his pockets but she wouldn't let them go. Then squeezed them to mush. Which of course was fun too.
Anyway, then I started thinking, which is which? Are these muscadines or scuppernongs?
Well in looking up how to spell that, they are in fact muscadines.
Yum-O!

** Dr Brown Bottles POST #2**
OK so you know about the issue with the Dr Brown's Bottles and BPA. BPA is released from the plastic when it exposed to high heat, such as your dishwasher or microwave.
Well, we are trying to wean Heidi off the bottle but it's part of her sleep routine, it's going to be a while. We are down to 2 bottles though, at naptime and nighttime. That said, it looks like we will need bottles for a while longer.
Well after researching more about BPA and it's effects I am ditching Dr. Brown. I had already decided we would not be using them with any other babies because of other issues, i.e., they have too many parts and leak like a sieve. However, this is the ONLY bottle Heidi's ever taken.
So I did a little more research into Dr Brown's Bottles. Only the bottle itself contains BPA, not the parts. Now...... Dr Brown's is now selling glass bottles that will accept their parts, however they are expensive. $13 for TWO glass bottles, ouch!
So I searched some more and came across a mom, who like me, thought there has to be a cheaper method. Well it looks like there is! Gerber makes a bottle called "Gerber First Essentials" . These will accept Dr Brown stem, valve, collar and nipple. However, you must use the short stems from the small 4oz bottles. AND they are MUCH cheaper than buying the glass bottles. I got a 3-pack at Walmart for $3.50! So, your not out much $$ if you want to try it yourself!
I just used it with Heidi's nap and it worked GREAT! No leaks, same flow, ect.
I am posting a pic with the Gerber bottle package on the left and a Gerber bottle fitted with Dr Browns "parts" on the right.
Hope this helps out some of you guys! Go BPA-free!

** DR Brown Bottles**
I know many of you guys that read this use Dr Brown Bottles, or used them in the past.
We also used them for Heidi. I have been catching articles about them containing BPA for a while.
I dismissed it because they were still selling them everywhere. Well I came across this article in USA today online about them, and Walmart and Toys r US are pulling items containing it, including Dr Brown hard plastic bottles. You can check out the article here:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-09-16-bpa-heart_N.htm?csp=34&loc=interstitialskip
If the link doesn't work you can go to USATODAY.com and seach BPA.

Violet's New Do... HAHAHAHA
So our cat, Violet, had really long hair.
Every time she went outside she would come back with half a bush stuck to her.
Well I finally took her today and got her shaved. The lady doing it warned me she would cut it really short, so Violet might look kind of gray and really skinny......
We did decide to leave her head, feet and tail though.hahaha......
This is was the result.
I couldn't help myself I laughed the whole way back home.
Violet isn't holding it against me though. In fact she doesn't seem to notice.
But WOW is she funny looking.
